Comet ("we", "us") is a live public-transport map for Australia. This policy explains what data we collect, why, and who we share it with. Using Comet means you agree to this policy.
What we collect
- Location. If you allow it, your device location is used in your browser to centre the map and suggest a nearby stop. When you set a leave-now alarm, the stop location you choose is sent to our server so we can tell you when to leave. We don't track or store your continuous location history.
- Location sharing (optional, Comet Pro). If you turn on "Share my live location", your live position is shared with the friends/family you've added and accepted — only while Comet is open and sharing is on. We keep only your latest position, in memory, for a few minutes; it is never written to disk, backups or logs, and there is no location history. Turn the toggle off, background the app, or remove a person to stop instantly. It's off by default.
- Account. If you sign in for Comet Pro, we receive your name and email address from Google Sign-In to create your account.
- Payments. Subscriptions are processed by Stripe. We never see or store your card details — Stripe handles them and gives us a subscription status only.
- Push subscriptions. If you enable alarms, your browser's push subscription is stored so we can send "leave now" notifications.
- Usage & device data. Privacy-respecting, cookie-based analytics (PostHog) — only after you accept the cookie banner — covering page views, broad region, device, and in-app actions (searches, routes viewed, map areas browsed), and we may record anonymised session interactions with form inputs masked, so we can improve Comet. Plus standard server logs. We never send your GPS location to analytics — and never to anyone unless you explicitly turn on location sharing (above).
Cookies & local storage
We use cookies and browser local storage for essential functions — keeping you signed in and remembering preferences such as your last map view.
Who we share data with
- Google — sign-in.
- Stripe — subscription payments.
- Cloudflare — hosting, content delivery and security.
- Map & transit data providers — map tiles (CARTO / OpenStreetMap) and each operator's open transit feed.
We do not sell your personal information.
Data retention & your rights
We keep account and subscription data while your account is active. You can sign out at any time, manage or cancel your subscription from the app, and request access to or deletion of your data by contacting us.
Children
Comet is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their personal information.
Changes
We may update this policy; material changes will be reflected by the "last updated" date above.
